Terms of Use

The developer's own service terms — effective 5 August 2026.

Effective 5 August 2026. These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of Gemcheck (the "App"), provided by Lilin Systems ("we", "us"). By using Gemcheck you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the App. These are our own service terms; your licence to download and use the App from the App Store is governed separately by Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement — see §11.

1. What Gemcheck is. Gemcheck is an iPhone measurement tool for trading cards. It photographs a card, corrects the photograph for perspective, and measures the printed border on each of the four sides in millimetres to produce left/right and top/bottom centering ratios for the front and the back. It then compares those ratios against the centering tolerances that PSA, Beckett (BGS) and CGC each publish, and reports the highest grade each house's published centering rule would allow. Every detected edge can be corrected by hand with a loupe, and the numbers update as you move it.

2. Licence. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App on Apple devices you own or control, for your own purposes, in accordance with these Terms and the App Store Terms of Service. You may not copy, redistribute, rent, sublicense, reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the App, or create derivative works from it, except to the limited extent applicable law expressly permits.

3. No guarantee of any grading outcome. This is the most important clause in this document. Gemcheck estimates; grading companies decide. Specifically, and without limitation:

  • A number in Gemcheck is not a grade. What the App reports for centering is a ceiling — the best grade a house's published centering tolerance would permit for the ratios measured — and a ceiling is not an award. A card that clears every centering threshold has merely not been disqualified by centering.
  • Corners, edges and surface are not scored. No grading house publishes numeric criteria for them, and the App does not invent any. It magnifies them so that you can look, and ranks corners against each other; it does not turn them into a subgrade or fold them into the reported figure. Any of them can cap a real grade far below the centering ceiling.
  • Published tolerances are not the whole of a house's behaviour. PSA, for example, publishes that a small variance may be permitted at the grader's sole discretion based on a card's overall eye appeal — and equally reserves the right to grade a card down. A measured result is therefore a statement about the published rule, not a prediction of what a grader will do.
  • Measurement depends on your photograph. Lighting, focus, camera angle, a bent or non-flat card, sleeves, toploaders and borderless card designs all affect what can be measured. Where the App cannot measure something reliably it says so rather than quoting a number, but no photograph-based measurement is exact.
  • Accordingly, we make no representation, warranty or guarantee — express or implied — that any grade, subgrade, designation, label, valuation or resale outcome will match anything the App reported, and we are not responsible for grading fees, shipping costs, insurance, purchase or sale decisions, or any other cost or loss arising from your submission of a card or your reliance on the App. Decide with your own judgement, and if the stakes are high, get a professional opinion.

4. No affiliation with the grading companies or with Pokémon. Gemcheck is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, certified by or connected in any way to Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) or Collectors Universe, Beckett Collectors Club Services / Beckett Grading Services (BGS), Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc. or The Pokémon Company. The centering tolerances the App compares against are taken from each company's own published standards and are referenced descriptively so you can see which rule produced which answer. All trade marks, service marks and trade names are the property of their respective owners, and are used nominatively to identify those companies' published standards — never to imply their involvement. Published standards change without notice; the App shows the date its tables were last checked.

5. Subscriptions, auto-renewal and prices. Gemcheck is free to download and includes 3 free scans with full measurement and full manual adjustment. Those scans are a one-time trial, not a recurring monthly allowance. Gemcheck Pro removes the scan limit. Prices at the effective date of these Terms, in US dollars:

  • Yearly — $39.99 per year, with a 1 week free trial. The trial is available once per Apple Account (and per Family Sharing group, where applicable). Unless cancelled at least 24 hours before it ends, the trial converts automatically to a paid year.
  • Monthly — $5.99 per month. No free trial.

Prices in other currencies are set from Apple's price tiers for your storefront, and local tax may apply. Subscriptions are billed to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase and renew automatically for the same period unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; the renewal is charged within 24 hours before the period ends. If you buy a subscription while a free trial is running, the remaining free period is forfeited. We may change prices or the contents of a tier; a change to what you already pay takes effect at your next renewal after Apple has notified you, and you can cancel before it applies.

6. Cancelling, and refunds. Manage or cancel your subscription in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or at apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; access continues until the end of the period you have paid for. We cannot cancel a subscription or issue a refund on your behalf — Apple is the merchant of record for App Store purchases, and refund requests go to Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com. Deleting the App does not cancel a subscription.

7. Your content. The photographs you take and the measurements and binder entries the App derives from them are yours. They are stored on your device, not with us (see the Privacy Policy), so we claim no licence over them and cannot access, restore or delete them for you. Deleting the App deletes them.

8. Our content. The App — the Gemcheck name and mark, its interface, colour system, icons, copy, measurement code and grading tables as compiled and presented — is our intellectual property or is licensed to us. Nothing in these Terms transfers it to you.

9. Acceptable use. Do not use the App to break the law or infringe anyone's rights; do not misrepresent an App output as an official grade, certification or appraisal from any grading company; do not present adjusted measurements as automatic ones when selling a card; and do not attempt to disrupt, decompile or reverse-engineer the App.

10. No warranty, and limitation of liability. The App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary or punitive damages, nor for lost profits, lost value, wasted grading or shipping fees, or lost, damaged or devalued cards, arising out of or relating to your use of — or inability to use — the App or your reliance on anything it reports. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total aggregate liability is limited to the greater of the amount you actually paid us for the App in the twelve months before the claim, or USD 25. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you, and nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. You also keep any non-excludable statutory consumer rights.

11. Apple. Your licence to use the App is Apple's Standard End User Licence Agreement, at apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula. These Terms are additional to it and do not replace it; where they conflict irreconcilably on the licence itself, Apple's EULA governs. Apple is not a party to these Terms, has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App, and is not responsible for the App or for any claim relating to it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this section and may enforce it.

12. Changes and termination. We may update these Terms to reflect changes to the App or the law; when we do, we will change the effective date above, and continuing to use the App after a change means you accept the revised Terms. You may stop using Gemcheck at any time by deleting it (cancel any subscription separately, per §6). We may suspend or discontinue the App, or any part of it, at any time.

13. Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Lilin Systems is established, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and without depriving you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.
